Iowa Stories 2000 Foundation at a Glance

A 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt foundation established by Christie Vilsack to promote literacy in Iowa. Contributions tax deductible.

Strengthens communities, families, and children through reading, storytelling, and libraries.

Two major components: Books for Kindergartners and Literacy Communities.

Christie Vilsack raises $200,000 annually to give 42,000 books to all kindergartners in the state so they can have a book to call their own.

2002—I is for Iowa by Mary Ann Gensieke.

2003—Bells Goes to the Fair by Susan Knapp.

2004—Sweet Corn and Sushi by Lori Erickson.

2005—Family Pictures/Cuadros de familia by Carmen Lomas Garza.

2006—The Pickle Patch Bathtub by Frances Kennedy

Literacy Communities objectives:

  • Encourage reading and sharing of family stories.
  • Rebuild a sense of community in Iowa.
  • Focus on public and school libraries as community centers for lifelong learning.
  • Foster a working relationship for school and public librarians.
  • Encourage non-traditional partnerships between libraries and other community organizations.
  • Recognize communities that have achieved a high level of literacy through support of their libraries and the development of partnerships.

The Glass Apple Award honors outstanding teacher-librarians, and school districts that even in tough financial times support certified teacher-librarians and recognize the increasingly critical role that teacher-librarians and adequately supported school library/media centers play in the education of Iowa’s children.
