Independence's
literacy project consists of developing ABC (Activities
and Books for Children) story kits. The story kits are
designed to engage preschool children in reading and
are targeted to reach home daycare providers. Each kit,
a plastic storage container, centers on a theme and
contains six books reflecting this theme. Activities
such as finger plays, flannel board stories, craft projects,
and pictures for coloring are included to encourage
children to become actively involved with what is read
in the books. Themes range from animals and seasons
to authors and storybook characters. These kits may
be checked out at the Independence Public Library and
each kit is geared to meet the reading needs of up to
six children.
